What Is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession focused on assessing, diagnosing, and treating conditions that affect movement and physical function. Physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercise, and education to reduce pain, restore mobility, and help patients return to the activities that matter most to them.
At ACCEL Health and Sport Performance Centre, physiotherapy is delivered across two clinics, in Halifax and Dartmouth, serving a wide range of patients: from competitive athletes recovering from sport injuries to individuals managing chronic pain, recovering after surgery, or navigating the physical demands of everyday life.
Physiotherapy is commonly sought for: sports and overuse injuries, back and neck pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, concussion management, motor vehicle accident recovery, and general movement or strength limitations.
How Our Physiotherapy Team Approaches Your Care
ACCEL's physiotherapy team brings a depth of credentials and sport experience that is genuinely rare for a community clinic. Every physiotherapist holds advanced training in their area of focus, spanning manual therapy, sports rehabilitation, concussion management, vestibular rehab, and performance screening. Together, the team holds credentials including a Fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT), a designation held by fewer than 5% of physiotherapists in Canada, a Registered International Sports Physical Therapist diploma, sport physiotherapy certifications, and TPI Medical and Fitness Level 2 certifications. The team has collectively worked with Hockey Nova Scotia, Hockey Canada, Soccer Nova Scotia, and the Volleyball Canada National Men’s Program, held leadership roles at multiple Canada Games, and includes experience supporting athletes at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and the Olympic Games.
Every patient assessment begins with a thorough one-on-one evaluation. From there, your physiotherapist develops an individualized treatment plan that may include manual therapy, exercise prescription, electrotherapies, acupuncture, and concussion protocols, as appropriate for your condition. We also use VALD Performance Technology, industry-leading assessment tools that provide objective, data-driven insights to track your progress and guide treatment decisions.

What Physiotherapy Can Help You Achieve
Physiotherapy at ACCEL is designed to produce measurable, functional results. Patients commonly experience:
Reduced pain and improved mobility. Manual therapy, exercise, and targeted modalities address the source of your symptoms, not just the pain itself.
Return to sport or activity. Whether you are a competitive athlete or someone who wants to get back to walking without discomfort, your physiotherapist will build a return-to-activity plan appropriate to your goals and timeline.
Long-term prevention. Through movement screening, strength training, and patient education, ACCEL physiotherapists help identify and address imbalances before they become re-injuries.
Physiotherapy is all about helping you move better and feel stronger. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or aiming to elevate your performance, our physiotherapists provide personalized care designed around your goals. Using tailored exercise programs and hands-on techniques, we work to reduce pain, restore mobility, and enhance your quality of life—so you can get back to doing what you love.
Our team brings advanced expertise in Manual Therapy, Sports Physiotherapy, Concussion Management, Dry Needling, and Acupuncture. Beyond the clinic, we support athletes in the community, on the field, and at the rink. From local teams and recreational athletes to professional sports and even the Olympic Games, our physiotherapists have provided on-site care, sport therapy coverage, and educational sessions to keep athletes performing at their best.
Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy
No. In Nova Scotia, physiotherapy is a direct-access profession, meaning you can book an appointment without a physician referral. However, some extended health benefit plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so it is worth checking your plan before your first visit.
Yes. ACCEL Health offers direct billing to most major insurance providers at both the Halifax and Dartmouth locations. Contact the clinic at 902-446-4004 to confirm your specific plan is covered.
This depends on the nature and severity of your condition. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic estimate after your initial assessment. Many patients see meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 sessions for acute conditions; chronic or post-surgical cases often benefit from a longer program.
ACCEL physiotherapists treat a broad range of conditions including sports injuries, sprains and strains, back and neck pain, shoulder and knee injuries, post-surgical recovery, concussion management, motor vehicle accident injuries, and general mobility or strength limitations.
Physiotherapy focuses on movement rehabilitation, exercise prescription, and manual therapy to restore function. Chiropractic care focuses on the assessment and treatment of the spine and joints through adjustments and soft tissue techniques. ACCEL offers both services, and many patients benefit from an integrated approach. Speak with your clinician about which discipline is the right starting point for your condition.
